Breaking: Real Madrid star tests positive for Covid-19

The player will now have to self-isolate and will miss the Champions League tie against Manchester City.

Spanish forward Mariano Diaz tested positive following a check after returning to training from a holiday away.

The Champions League last-16 second-leg is not thought to be in jeopardy despite the Los Blancos ace’s positive result but he will now miss the tie.

26 year old Diaz was born in Catalonia but last played for the Domincan Republic national team through his mother’s side, and came up through the Espanyol and Badalona youth ranks.

Real Madrid released a statement saying: “After the Covid-19 tests carried out individually on our first football team yesterday by the Real Madrid Medical Services, our player Mariano has given a positive result.

“The player is in perfect health and complying with the sanitary isolation protocol at home.”

Even though the club say he is not showing any symptoms of coronavirus, he must stay home for two weeks therefore missing the game in England next week.

Diaz assured fans on social media site Instagram that he is doing well, saying: “Thanks for all your messages of support. I feel perfectly fine, thanks to God.
